Will my mom be all right?

by Worried Wilma

I'm a teenage girl and my mom was diagnosed with herpes a year ago after she was sexually assaulted on a business trip. I was too scared to find answers until now so please don't sugar coat it. Be straight with me. Is it possible that my mom could die because of herpes?

Dear Worried Wilma,

First of all, I’m sorry to hear about the assault on your mom. I hope the perpetrator was caught and punished for it!

Getting a herpes diagnosis may seem like the end of the world, but there is good news.

There is love and life after herpes...

Despite the “bad stigma” attached to it, herpes is a just minor skin condition that presents some inconvenience from time to time. Although it cannot be cured, it can definitely be treated and is in no way life-threatening.

Herpes is actually very common, with 1 in every 6 US adults having the virus in their system. The first few outbreaks can be tough but it all gets better after that.

So, no, your Mom won’t die because of herpes.

It’s great that you’re actively doing your research and seeking for answers. Sometimes all you can do is be there to support her, be a shoulder to cry on if she needs that. Maybe buy her medication or go to doctor’s appointments with her, do uplifting activities together, even sign her up for a herpes support group if she needs someone in the same boat to talk to.

Your mom is going through a challenging time right now. Being understanding and helping her get back on her feet is the best thing you can do. In the meantime, have hope. Just keep reminding her that her world may have been changed, but it is far from destroyed.

All the best,

Gary
