Scared, Angry and Confused

by Sara R.
(NY)

I am in the middle of my first herpes outbreak and it is some of the most excruciating pain I have ever experienced. There are several sores (I woke up with about two and since returning from the doctor have more than 5) and it is absolutely terrible trying to pee. If anyone else has experienced this and has some insight or advice, please please please share.

Is there any way to not dread peeing during this time? There is no worse feeling than hearing the news from the doctor and knowing exactly who you got it from. I am no longer with the guy who gave it to me, but I regret ever knowing him/trusting him. What truly gets me is he was the only guy I had ever been with.

At this point besides the terrible pain, swelling and itching "down there", I am more angry than anything. Is this a normal reaction? And will the pain EVER subside? The doctor has me on a 10 day regime of Valtrex. I've taken one dose with no relief... any insight or others with the same situation? Your comments are much appreciated.

Dear Sara R.

I'm sorry to hear that you're having so much discomfort. The first outbreak is usually the worst. But hang in there, there is good news. It all gets better after that.

It's normal to feel angry and sad. Remember though that you're not alone in this. I know it is hitting you hard right now, and there are other things you are going through, but you are still you. You are not dirty, less important, or any of those awful things. At least you are taking action and taking action means RELIEF. However, it does take some time for the medication to work.

Most people have to try some different treatments for Herpes until they find a solution that works for them. Everyone's body is different. Our article on the various Herpes Treatment Options might help you get started. There are tons of tips there including newer, alternative treatments for herpes.

Hope things improve for you soon.

Gary
